Buying Used Engines in Bulk: How to Review Test Reports

Review used-engine compression reports, leak-down results and running videos before a wholesale order. Send engine codes, quantities and destination to LSVANT.

For an engine importer, a “tested” label is only useful when it identifies the unit, the test performed and the recorded result. Before buying used engines from China in bulk, give your purchasing and technical teams the same evidence checklist.

This guide is for established importers, engine wholesalers and distributors assessing a mixed purchasing list. It explains what to request for the proposed units, rather than promising one test package for every engine.

Send Engine Code + Quantity

Match every report to the actual engine

Use a readable full engine code, a serial number where available, and a supplier unit reference. Keep those identifiers on the quotation line, photo set and report. For several engines sharing a code, create a separate evidence record for each unit. A warehouse video can show the sourcing environment; your purchasing decision needs records linked to the offered engines.

Distinguish compression, leak-down and running evidence

Ask whether “compression tested” means a mechanical pressure test or a relative-compression calculation. They are different methods: a relative result should not be treated as a pressure reading. Ask your technician to use the procedure for the exact engine version when interpreting a report.

EvidenceRequest from the supplierUse in the buying decision
Mechanical compressionA result for each cylinder, pressure units, test date, engine temperature/state and the procedure used.Compare the recorded results with the applicable manufacturer procedure.
Relative compressionThe test method, equipment/software and cylinder-by-cylinder results.Identify the screening method before comparing it with a mechanical test.
Cylinder leak-downEquipment/setup, input pressure, readings by cylinder and any noted leakage path.Have your technician assess the method and results together.
Startup / running videoUnit identifier, test date, whether the engine was cold or warm, the start sequence and usable audio.Review the operation shown and note the limits of that recording.

There is no single pressure or leak-down percentage to apply to every used engine. BMW’s N63 instructions specify test conditions; Subaru’s leak-down guidance highlights equipment differences. Use the relevant procedure for the unit being reviewed, rather than importing a threshold from another engine.

What an actionable inspection record contains

A useful record separates measured results, visible observations and information not recorded. Ask who performed the check and whether photos of the readings or the original report are available. Keep remarks about visible damage, missing equipment and included accessories against the same unit reference.

  • Full engine identifier and unit reference
  • Test method, date and test conditions
  • Cylinder-by-cylinder results with units where applicable
  • Original report or clear reading photos, if available
  • Visible condition and included accessory list
  • Reviewer decision and any request for further evidence

Keep donor mileage evidence separate from condition testing. If mileage is quoted, ask what supports it and how the donor record is linked to the engine. A compression result or running clip is not a mileage record.

Set a batch acceptance process before packing

Agree the evidence you require before accepting proposed units. For each line, record whether your technical reviewer has approved it, requested another check or declined the offer. If a unit is replaced during sourcing, review the replacement’s own records and update the quotation list.

After acceptance, carry the same unit references into the agreed packing list, separately packed accessory records and receiving check. Keep test evidence and the written after-sales terms with the order. A test report describes a check at a particular time; the commercial terms define the agreed remedy and responsibilities.

For importers serving African markets

For importers serving Ghana, Uganda or Tanzania, and wholesale buyers in Nigeria and Kenya, use a consistent evidence format that your receiving team and workshop customers can interpret. State the destination country, port or receiving place and any onward-delivery requirement. Confirm current import eligibility and documentation with your local broker; a technical report does not establish import approval.

Send a wholesale request with your evidence requirements

LSVANT sources used engines through Guanyu inventory and partner dismantling channels in China. Send your mixed buying list and required evidence level. Our team will review the requested units, actual supply, included parts and the photos or inspection information available before preparing the quotation scope. Testing availability and any additional checks are confirmed for the specific offer.

  • Company name, importer/wholesaler role and reply contact
  • Full engine code and quantity per code
  • Vehicle model/year and VIN/chassis if available
  • AT/MT/CVT, 2WD/4WD and gearbox code if known
  • Engine only or engine + gearbox; complete engine/long block and accessory requirements
  • Destination country and named port/receiving place; requested FOB/CIF quotation scope
  • Required unit photos, test method/report or running-video evidence
  • Your technical reviewer’s acceptance requirements and any unresolved details

Questions to resolve before approving a batch

Does a running video replace a compression report?

They show different evidence. Ask what was recorded, whether it belongs to the offered unit and which checks your technical reviewer still requires.

Can the same test report cover several engines with the same code?

Keep an individual record for each unit. Shared code or appearance does not establish the same condition or test result.

What if a requested test record is not available?

Ask what evidence is available and whether a further check can be arranged. Agree the next step with your technical team before accepting the unit; do not treat an unperformed check as passed.
