For an engine importer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the cheapest sea-freight line is not necessarily the lowest cost to the warehouse. A quote to Matadi, an onward delivery to Kinshasa and a transit shipment for another inland city can cover very different work. Start with the final receiving address, then compare the same engine batch and the same transport scope.
1. Name the receiving city before choosing the port
Write “Democratic Republic of the Congo / DRC” on the enquiry, together with the city. “Congo” alone can mean a different country. Pointe-Noire is in the Republic of the Congo; it must not silently become your final delivery point when you intended a DRC destination.
CMA CGM describes feeder connections for Matadi and Boma via regional hubs. CMA CGM.
Its DRC intermodal information also describes Kinshasa via Luanda. These are route references to compare with your forwarder, not a promise of a direct sailing from China. CMA CGM.
For inland destinations, ask which gateway, border crossing, transit formalities and final delivery are actually included. The carrier’s regional map shows alternatives beyond the DRC coast; route availability and acceptance of the actual cargo must be checked for the booking. CMA CGM — DRC.
| Your receiving point | Ask for this in writing |
|---|---|
| Kinshasa / western DRC | Named discharge terminal, transfer to Kinshasa, clearance location and final unloading point. |
| Lubumbashi / Kolwezi | Proposed gateway and inland corridor; transit and border responsibilities; final depot or warehouse. |
| Goma / Bukavu / other inland cities | Current operational corridor, intermediate handovers, insurance scope and the last receiving location. |
2. Compare the whole handover, not just ocean freight
Compare quotations against one scope sheet: engine batch value; China-side packing and handling; ocean freight; insurance; destination terminal and document charges; clearance and assessed taxes; inland transport; unloading and empty-container return. Ask each party to mark included, excluded or awaiting quotation. Do not assume a sea-freight price includes all these items.
For a price marked CIF Matadi, ask separately what remains between arrival and your warehouse. For inland delivery, identify the named final place and who pays at each transfer. Confirm free-time terms, when counting starts, storage charges and container-return obligations with the carrier or agent; a delay while checking goods can create costs beyond the engine price.
Do not accept a fixed engine count as proof that a container plan works. Size, weight, accessories, support frames and forklift access affect the load. A mixed batch of petrol engines, diesel engines and gearboxes should have its own packing plan.
| Written quote scope | What still needs a separate check |
|---|---|
| Ocean freight line only | Origin handling, terminal charges, clearance and inland delivery. |
| Price to a named discharge port | Release and collection, local charges and delivery beyond the terminal. |
| Price to a named inland place | Customs/transit scope, unloading, empty return and explicitly excluded charges. |
3. Coordinate FERI and shipment documents before booking
Ask your appointed forwarding or clearing agent to coordinate FERI requirements and validation timing with OGEFREM before the booking is finalised. OGEFREM — FERI.
Align the consignee’s legal name, destination, commercial invoice, packing list and draft bill of lading. Describe used engines, separately packed gearboxes and accessories clearly. Have the agent confirm the correct customs classification, any inspection or import requirements and assessed charges for your actual goods; an engine family name alone cannot settle those questions.
If the sea port is outside DRC, record the goods’ final DRC destination and agree transit paperwork and the handover to the next transporter. Before approving the shipping documents, reconcile package count, gross weight, engine quantities and the parties responsible for outstanding documents.
4. Keep the engine list traceable through every handover
A container number identifies a container, not the engines inside it. Agree a unit reference for each offered engine and use that reference on the accepted list, dated photos and packing records. This becomes especially useful when cargo changes hands between a sea terminal, inland transporter and receiving warehouse.
For each unit, confirm the full engine code and suffix, included and missing parts, visible condition and the actual inspection method. Keep engine-only quantities separate from engine-plus-gearbox quantities. Match package labels to the packing list; retain loading photos, the recorded container and seal numbers, and the shipping documents.
At receipt, compare labels and quantities before separating the batch. Record visible packing damage, missing items and identifiers with photos, and follow the claim procedure agreed for the order. A warehouse overview video does not identify the particular engines on your invoice.
5. Send a DRC wholesale enquiry that can be priced
LSVANT supports remote wholesale purchasing and Guangzhou warehouse visits by appointment. Send your engine list first; we check available units and the proposed supply scope before quoting. Standard checks are manual cranking and photo records. A compression, bench or running test needs separate agreement and evidence for the actual unit.
Include company and reply contact; full engine codes and quantities; required accessories or gearbox; final DRC city and receiving place; preferred port if already chosen; and whether you need a goods-only, sea-freight or inland-delivery quotation. If the route is undecided, say so rather than selecting a port at random.

Questions from importers
Can you quote delivery to Kinshasa instead of only a seaport?
State Kinshasa and the exact receiving place in your enquiry. Ask for a written transport scope and a current feasibility check; a port quote should not be read as warehouse delivery.
Can I mix different engine codes in one container?
Send quantities by full code and supply scope. The proposed units, packing dimensions, weights and shipping acceptance must be checked together before the loading plan is agreed.
Does an engine price include DRC taxes and FERI charges?
Only charges explicitly included in the written offer belong in that price. Ask your agent to itemise local formalities, duties and inland costs for the particular shipment.
