To import used engines from China into Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania or Ghana, first confirm the importer, the actual goods and the destination clearance route. Then approve the engine batch, agree freight scope and prepare consistent documents. One African country’s approval does not cover another country’s shipment.

Nigeria: separate tokunbo condition from SON documentation
In Nigeria, “tokunbo engine” is a sales term, not a customs certificate or proof of mechanical condition. SON distinguishes used products from refurbished or re-engineered goods in its SONCAP guidance. Ask SON or your agent to confirm the route for the actual engine shipment; do not treat a used-goods exclusion as freedom from all SON controls.
Plan Form M and PAAR with your importer, authorised bank and clearing agent. The government’s B’Odogwu migration notice also shows why old portal instructions should not be copied blindly. Agree the current process and document references before shipping; supplier photos do not replace these documents.

Kenya: arrange origin evidence before dispatch
KRA’s origin notice requires a Certificate of Origin for imports, with specified exceptional arrangements subject to Customs approval. A Japanese-brand engine bought in China is not automatically Chinese-origin or Japanese-origin on paperwork. Establish the supported origin and the acceptable issuing route with the supplier and agent before dispatch.
Ask separately which KEBS inspection or conformity procedure applies to standalone used engines from China. Do not copy complete-vehicle age or steering rules onto an engine batch. For a Mombasa quotation, state the final receiving town and whether the cargo stays in Kenya or moves onward in transit.

Tanzania: check the China shipment and the TBS route
TBS publishes regulated HS-code lists and conformity guidance. Have the agent check the exact goods, condition and export country against the applicable controls before booking. Toyota or Nissan branding does not decide whether a China shipment follows a notice for goods dispatched from Japan.
For Dar es Salaam, distinguish port arrival from release and delivery. TPA’s import process separates clearing-agent work, customs, shipping-agent release, port payment and collection. Name who handles each stage. An inland or transit destination needs its own route, documents and transport scope.

Ghana: make the ICUMS file match the physical batch
GRA’s import procedure identifies importer tax identification, invoices, packing data, transport documents and the ICUMS declaration process. Ask your agent to review the draft shipment file while changes are still possible. Confirm any applicable standards inspection or permits for the goods; do not assume a universal exemption.
Whether the agreed gateway is Tema or another named port, compare the total to your receiving warehouse. Keep engines, gearboxes and separately packed accessories identifiable. Your invoice, package marks and receiving list should let staff check what arrived without guessing from “used auto parts”.

Sea freight: compare the same receiving point
Ask for the loading port, destination port, direct or transshipment service, estimated schedule, packing dimensions/weight, free-time conditions and exclusions. Schedules and freight change; obtain a shipment-specific offer rather than a fixed transit-time promise. CIF is not a delivered-and-duty-paid warehouse price. Budget destination handling, customs, taxes, storage exposure and inland transport separately unless expressly included.
Build a mixed-engine list your team can receive
Use demand from your own customers, not an unverified “Africa bestseller” list. Keep 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE on different lines; a 2TR family reference still needs its full suffix and configuration checked. Record quantity, engine only or engine + gearbox, required accessories, vehicle information and actual-unit evidence. AT/MT or 2WD/4WD is a check, not a fitment guarantee.
